SVBCH MINUTES

APRIL 2, 2011 MEETING

ATTENDANCE: Merle Olsen, Arleen MacKinnon, Debbie Prater, Cate Kutz, Josie Imper, Jerry Reese, Susan Girard, Mike Flanigan, Wayne Nishek, Jim Michaud   Guests: Rob Kutz.

The meeting was called to order by President, Merle Olsen.

The minutes of our March meeting were unanimously approved as well as the treasurer’s report.

Jenni Grimmet, Triton Vet Service, provided health services to those who needed shots, coggins tests, etc. for their animals.  Thank you Jenni for your services.  They were greatly appreciated.

 OLD BUSINESS

Merle reported that Steve Pedish of the Boundary Ranger District said there were no pending changes in trail classifications scheduled for this area.  He also reviewed the possible upcoming work projects that we may assist the Forest Service in performing as discussed at the March meeting.  As a review, they are:

Goat Mtn. Trail head – Forest Service is going to place gravel the parking area.  Unfortunately, they cannot enlarge the area.  Josie suggested moving the parking area to the gravel pit just up the road and Steve will look into that possibility.  The project is scheduled for June 30 and Steve asked if SVBCH would provide workers and equipment to spread the gravel.  Merle will call Steve at the Forest Service to see when they may need our help.  He suggested that a few people pick a time to drive up there to look the site over.  Merle will call those who are interested and available to go as soon as the weather clears up.

Shorty Lookout – The Forest Service may need assistance packing in lumber – June 25-26 (weather permitting).

Grouse Mountain – The boggy area is on Forest Capital land.  Mike said he believed there is a way around it and SVBCH will look into an alternative route as soon as the snow melts.  Any work the Forest Service does may have to wait until after the logging is finished.  Steve will keep us posted.

Harrison Lake (#6) – may be able to help. Steve will let us know.

Fisher Peak – Work will be done by helicopter.

Long Canyon – Forest Service plans on sawing out downfall the end of July.

Brush Lake – In May and June, the Forest Service will be improving a 5-mile loop trail around the lake. It’s designated as a bicycle trial, but horses can use it too.  It will be a good easy ride.

The Forest Service asked us to report any trail hazards we may encounter when riding.  The number to call is 267-5561.

Litehouse has grant money available for trail head work.  Wayne suggested that we request it now rather than later.  However, we should have a plan to present to them.  Mike said the Hawkins’ would like to see the 120 trail in Clarkfork improved, however the access to the trail head is on private property and this may present a problem.  We need to look into it further.

Debbie brought up the WSU Veterinary School tour.  We discussed possible dates and decided on a Friday in April.  Debbie will call and see what is available.  We will pick a date and the telephone tree will call and get a count on those interested in going.

 NEW BUSINESS

We discussed the need to be prepared to clear trails of downfall this year because of the large snow pack.  Mike said it might be advisable to take a pack animal and chain saw on our rides.  Jerry suggested that we look at our packing equipment and design a pack saddle to fit smaller animals.  Mike said he’d seen pictures of some in a magazine and would look for them.  Jim, Merle, Jerry and Wayne will look into what we need.

Jerry said the Twin Rivers Chapter of the Back Country Horsemen (Washington) has a poker ride that is fun.  He will get more information on it.

The Fish Trap poker ride is coming up on May 14 and a ride at Riverside State Park on May 15.  Attached are brochures on these rides.  They’re in Washington so be sure to have current health certificates and brand inspections if you plan on attending either or both of them.

Merle gave a report on the recent Brand Board meeting he attended in Boise.  A speaker from UC Davis reported on how DNA is used in animal identification, disputes and crimes.

 MAY  MEETING

May 20 AT 6:00 p.m. at J J Cookshack.  Come early if you want to order dinner

We hope to have Maryann from Bonner County Ranger District there to tell us what projects they may have available for us to help with this summer.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.
